************ Chapel Talk on 1 Peter 4:10-11 ************

By: Rev. Adrian Dieleman

This chapel talk was given on March 5, 1998

CVCS Chapel: Grades 4-6

This year your theme is "Called to Serve."

(1 Pt 4:10-11) Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (11) If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Needed:
-two big buckets with one full of water; a large measuring cup or dipper
-basketball low on air; basketball pump
-long column of figures; calculator
-cards with gifts of Spirit on them
1. Not Using Tools
Take the two big buckets with one full of water; a large measuring cup or dipper.
Move the water over from one bucket to the other with my hands.
What is wrong with what I am doing? I am not using the tools I have.

Take the basketball low on air; basketball pump.
Try to blow basketball up with my mouth.
What is wrong with what I am doing? I am not using the tools I have.

Take the long column of figures; calculator.
Add up the figures by hand.
What is wrong with what I am doing? I am not using the tools I have.

Sometimes we are so dumb. We don't use the tools that we have.

2. Tools Jesus Gave the Church
Jesus has given His church tools. Let's take a look at some of the tools. I need your help to do this (ASK KIDS IF ANY ARE GOOD IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS AND GIVE THEM CARD TO HOLD):
Creative Ability - music, art, poetry, painting ...
Discernment - know the difference between right and wrong
Encouragement - encourages people
Evangelism - able to talk to others about Jesus
Giving - generous with money and things
Hospitality - welcome and serve guests and strangers
Prayer - always prays for others
Mercy - feels bad for hurting people and does stuff for them
Prophecy - preach God's Word
Teaching - teach others from God's Word

3. Using Tools
Everyone who believes in Jesus is a tool. Everyone who believes in Jesus has been given two or three or even more tools. That includes you.

What is the wrong thing, the dumb thing, to do with these tools? (NOT USE THEM)
What is the right thing, the smart thing, the thing God want us to do, with these tools (GOD WANT US TO USE THEM)

What do you do with the tools God gave you? Do you just let them sit or lay there in the corner? Do you throw them in the garbage pail? Do you dig a deep hole and bury them? Of course not! You use them.

You use them to serve God and to serve each other.
