Jesus: The Light of the World
L = Leader; S = Students/Teachers; S1,S2 ... particular students

L -	In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless
and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters. -- Genesis 1:1-2
S -	And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. -- Genesis 1:3
(everyone lights his/her candle)

L -	There was light, glorious light. Adam and Eve lived in the light, walked in the light,
and enjoyed fellowship with God. We don't know how long they enjoyed the
perfection of the garden but there came a day when Satan approached and planted the
	seed of doubt ...
S -	When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the
eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave
some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. -- Genesis 3:6
L -	The result was darkness:
S1 -	But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them
	stumble. -- Proverbs 4:19
S2 -	Haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. -- Psalms 74:20
S3 -	He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he sends them wandering through
a trackless waste. They grope in darkness with no light; he makes them stagger like
	drunkards. -- Job 12:24-25
S4 -	"They know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the
foundations of the earth are shaken. -- Psalms 82:5
S5 -	For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to
him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. --
	Romans 1:21
(every candle extinguished but a tiny flickering flame at the front)

L -	The earth was full of darkness. Would things ever be the same again? Would man
ever live and walk in the light of God's presence again?
The earth was full of darkness, but this does not mean the darkness had won. For
there was still a flicker, a little flame of light. You see, God made a promise, a
promise to send light to a sin-darkened world:
(each student who reads the following is to light his/her candle when finished)
S6 -	A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. -- Numbers 24:17
S7 -	There will be no more gloom for those who were in distress ... The people walking
in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death
	a light has dawned. -- Isaiah 9:1,2
S8 -	For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his
shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace. -- Isaiah 9:6

L -	The message is clear: a great light was coming to a world darkened by sin. We
	know Him as Jesus.
S -	In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness,
but the darkness has not understood it. -- John 1:4-5
L -	The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
	-- John 1:14
S -	Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life." -- John 8:12
(those students with their candles lighted will now together light the Christ candle in the center and blow out their own candles)

L -	Christ is the light of the world.
S -	For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our
hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
	-- 2 Corinthians 4:6
L -	You and I, we are light in and through Christ.
(teachers come forward, light their candle from the Christ candle, sit down)
L -	What are we to do as light?
S -	For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "'I have made you a light for the
Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' " -- Acts 13:47
L -	"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people
light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light
to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they
may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. -- Matthew 5:14-16
(the light is to be passed down each row from teacher to student to student ...)
L -	For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of
	light. -- Ephesians 5:8
