Funeral Service for Russ Webber
(Mark 10:43-45) "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, (44) and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. (45) For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
For the past year it has been my privilege to serve as President of Russ Webber's Rotary club – County Center Rotary Club. Rotary has a motto: SERVICE ABOVE SELF. It should come as no surprise to anyone here that Russ Webber embodied this motto of SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
I visited with Russ & Annette in the hospital more than once. I read the Bible with them and prayed with them. As a pastor, what stuck out in my mind was Russ' devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. And, I want to tell you that Russ was imitating Jesus when he lived out Rotary's motto of SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
You see, if ever there was anyone who put SERVICE ABOVE SELF into practice, it was Jesus. He willingly suffered and died on the cross so that those who believe in Him can have eternal life.
As someone devoted to His God, Russ' whole life was service. In Rotary he did many acts of service: he functioned as President, he introduced potential new members to Rotary, he hosted dinners for Rotary fund-raisers, he – like all other good Rotarians – would hassle the President. And, he would let you know if the weekly program was a bore – by falling asleep.
I looked at the obituary in the newspaper. I was amazed at the large number of things Russ was involved in besides his church and his family. I think of Rotary, Visalia Youth Baseball, Quarterback Club, Visalia Wine Society, gourmet cook, gardening, etc., etc.
SERVICE ABOVE SELF. That describes Jesus. But that also describes His servant, his child, Russ Webber.
Let us pray ...
