AFTER THE BOYS AND GIRLS HAVE COME UP WITH THEIR PALM BRANCHES

A. Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday is the day Jesus came into Jerusalem on a donkey. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of boys and girls, of moms and dads, stood at the side of the road to greet King Jesus.

Do you think that all those people said, "Shhh, King Jesus is coming!"? Of course not! They were shouting something. Does anyone know what they were shouting? (GET ONE OF THE KIDS TO ANSWER) Yes, they were shouting "Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna!" when they saw Jesus.

And as they were shouting "Hosanna!" they were waving something. Does anyone know what they were waving? (THEY WERE WAVING PALM BRANCHES)

B. Jesus is King

Why did the boys and girls and their moms and dads shout "Hosanna!" and wave Palm branches? Let me tell you what it means.

Originally "Hosanna!" was a Hebrew prayer that asks God to save. But by the time of Jesus it was a shout of praise like "Hallelujah!" or "Praise the Lord!"

Palm branches were the national symbol of Israel - something like the stars and stripes on our flag or the maple leaf on the Canadian flag.

When we put the two together - the Hosannas and the palm branches - we see the people were saying Jesus is king.

To shout "Hosanna!" and to wave Palm branches means Jesus is king. It means the boys and girls and their parents were all excited and happy about King Jesus.

C. Thorns

I have something to show you (HOLD UP CROWN OF THORNS). Who can tell me what this is? (GET ONE OF THE CHILDREN TO ANSWER). Does anyone know who wore a crown of thorns? (GET ONE OF THE CHILDREN TO ANSWER). When did He wear it? (GET ONE OF THE CHILDREN TO ANSWER). Would you like to wear it? It would hurt, wouldn't it?

The "Hosannas!" and the Palm branches means Jesus is King. But what kind of King wears a crown of thorns? Here is a reminder that Jesus is the King Who suffered and died for us!
