This sermon was preached on September 17, 2000

based on 2 Timothy 3:15-17

Needed: Machete, Bible

A Machete

I have something to show you boys and girls. (PULL OUT MACHETE.) What is this? (GET ANSWERS.) This is a machete.

In Mexico, Thailand, Cambodia and other places of the world the machete is the only tool people use. They use it to clear brush, to cut down weeds around their homes, to slap and ride a donkey, to fish in a shallow stream, to peel vegetables and fruit, to hunt for supper, and to defend themselves when under attack.

B Bible

The Bible is like a machete (HOLD UP MACHETE). The Apostle Paul says the Bible is the sword (the machete) of the Spirit (Eph 6:17)? And Hebrews says the Bible is "sharper than any double-edged sword" (Heb 4:12).

Like a machete, the Bible is an all-purpose tool. We use it for many things.

-it makes us wise for salvation because it tell us about Jesus

-it teaches us

-it warns us when we go wrong

-it sets us straight

-it shows us how to live as God's children

The Bible is God's machete. The Bible is God's all-purpose tool.

C Read the Bible

What am I holding? (HOLD UP BIBLE.) Take a look. What I have in MY hands is the sword, the machete (HOLD IT UP) of the Spirit.

What do you think God wants you to do with the Bible? Does He want you to put it at the back of your closet where it gathers dust?

Of course not! A machete that sits around does no good. A Bible that sits around does no good either.

I want you to ask you boys and girls to do something: I want to ask you to read the Bible everyday.

Will you do that?
