This sermon was preached on April 1, 2001

based on Q & A 39

Good Morning, Boys and Girls

A. Count the Crosses

-Some people like to count in church. They count the number of organ pipes. They count the number of bricks or stones across the front. They count the number of lights above.

-I wonder if anyone has ever counted the number of crosses at the front of the church building.

-Do you know how many crosses we have?

-baptismal font - 1

-Lord's Supper table - 3

-side benches - 4

-front of pulpit - 1

9 crosses

-every other bench has one at each end

-we have crosses everywhere - even two on every grey hymn book

-the cross is important to us, isn't it

B. Cross of Christ

-Who does the cross belong to? Who died on the cross? (GET ANSWER FROM CHILDREN)

-this morning we remember that Jesus died on the cross

C. Cross and Baptism

-In a couple of minutes I am going to baptize Jenna Lexi Featherstone

-Her baptism shows us something.

Her baptism shows us that Jesus died on the cross for her.

Her baptism shows us that she is washed clean of her sins by the blood of Jesus on the cross.

-Think of the cross of Jesus as I baptize her.
