This sermon was preached on February 10, 2002
Based on Matthew 22:53b
Invite Youth Pastor to the front
I Animal Sounds
What noise does a cow make?
What about a horse?
Who is able to make pig noises?
What about a bird?
What about a lion?
What about a whale – I listened to their noises once.
So many different animals and so many different animal sounds.
II Sheep and Lambs
Do you boys and girls know who Tim Potstra is (GET RESPONSE).
He is our new youth pastor.
When Pastor Tim listens to you boys and girls, when I listen to you boys and girls, do you know what farm animal we hear? We hear the sound of sheep and lambs.
Who can tell me the noise a sheep makes?
Pastors are shepherds. I am a shepherd and Pastor Tim is a shepherd. It is our job to look after the sheep and the lambs. It is our job to look after you and all the people in the pews.
Who know what this is (HOLD UP SHEPHERD'S STAFF).
The shepherd uses this to:
-defend the sheep against wolves
-pull the sheep to safety
-guide them along the path
I am a shepherd and Pastor Tim is a shepherd but we don't really use a staff. We use the Word of God. The Bible is our shepherd's staff.
There are shepherds in the bible. King David was a shepherd. Shepherds went to Bethlehem when Jesus was born. And, Jesus is a shepherd.
In fact, Jesus is the Good Shepherd Who lays down His life for the sheep.
Today is a special Sunday. This morning we are installing Pastor Tim as one of the shepherds of the sheep. And, this morning in the sermon we are looking at what Jesus, the Good Shepherd, did to save the life of the sheep.
