************ Children's Sermon on Advent Wreath ************

By: Rev. Adrian Dieleman

This sermon was preached on Dec 15, 2002

EXPLANATION OF THE ADVENT WREATH (Week 3):

How many candles did we light last week? [TWO]
How many candles do we light this week? [THREE]
This means Christmas is getting closer and closer.

The last two weeks I told you why we light candles as we prepare for Christmas.
Candles remind us that Jesus is the __________ [LIGHT]
-Candles remind us that Jesus is the light Who chases away the darkness of sin.
-Candles remind us that in Jesus we have the light of God's presence.

Last week I also told you why the outside candles are purple. The color purple reminds us that Jesus is ______________ [KING]

This morning I want to tell you about the wreath [HOLD IT UP].
What is it made of? [EVERGREENS]
What shape is it? [CIRCLE]
Can someone point out to me where the circle begins and where it ends? [WAIT FOR A RESPONSE]
A circle has no beginning and no end. It just goes round and round and round.
Jesus is like this circle He has no beginning and no end. Jesus is ETERNAL. Jesus is eternal because Jesus is God. So, the circle reminds us that Jesus is God, that Jesus is divine, that Jesus is the Immanuel (which means "God with us").

Candles remind us that Jesus is __________ [LIGHT]
The purple candles reminds us that Jesus is ____________ [KING]
The round wreath reminds us that Jesus is __________ [GOD]; He has no beginning and no end.

Get three children to help me light three candles.
