By: Rev. Adrian Dieleman

This sermon was preached on Dec 22, 2002

EXPLANATION OF THE ADVENT WREATH (Week 4):

How many candles did we light last week? [THREE]
How many candles do we light this week? [FOUR]
This means Christmas is getting closer and closer.

The last three weeks I told you why we light candles as we prepare for Christmas.
Candles remind us that Jesus is the __________ [LIGHT]
-Candles remind us that Jesus is the light Who chases away the darkness of sin.
-Candles remind us that in Jesus we have the light of God's presence.

Two weeks I also told you why the outside candles are purple. The color purple reminds us that Jesus is ______________ [KING]

Last week I told you why the wreath is round. The round wreath reminds us that Jesus is __________ [GOD]; He has no beginning and no end.

Now, I want to talk about the wreath again. Not only is the wreath round. I want you to notice what it is made of.

The wreath is made of evergreens.
Evergreen trees are different from regular trees:
-What happens to the leaves of regular trees in the Fall [THEY DIE AND FALL OFF].
-The leaves or needles of evergreen trees never die and fall off. These trees always stay green. The leaves or needles are always living.

The evergreens remind us of something important:
-They remind us that Jesus came on Christmas Day to give us eternal life.
-They remind us that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary so that we can always stays alive.
-They remind us that Jesus came to save us so that we have life that never ends.

REVIEW:
-Candles remind us that Jesus is __________ [LIGHT]
-The purple candles reminds us that Jesus is ____________ [KING]
-The round wreath reminds us that Jesus is __________ [GOD]; He has no beginning and no end.
-The evergreens remind us that Jesus came so that we have _____________ [ETERNAL LIFE]
