Luke 1:31-33
"King Jesus"
Sunday School Christmas Program

Introduction
How did your program end? What did you just sing about? THAT JESUS IS KING.

At the time of Jesus, what does a king wear?
What does he have on his head? HOLD UP CROWN
What does he have on his back? PURPLE ROBE
What does he hold in his hand? SCEPTER/STAFF

Does Jesus look like a king? Does He have any of these things? No, He is a baby in a manger. Helpless. Unable to do anything.

Yet, the angel tells Mary her son is King. Listen to what the angel says:
(Lk 1:31-33) "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. (32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, (33) and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
Let's take a closer look at what the angel says.

JESUS
First, the angel says the baby's name is Jesus.
What does "Jesus" mean? Means Savior. Means God saves. That's why Jesus came.
(Lk 19:10) For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
(Mt 1:21) She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
(Lk 2:11) Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
(Lk 2:30) For my eyes have seen your salvation,
(1 Tim 1:15) Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ...
The baby is Savior.

Because He is Savior, He wears a special crown. HOLD UP CROWN OF THORNS. SOLDIERS SLAMMED THIS ON HIS HEAD. PUT PURPLE ROBE ON HIS BLEEDING BACK. PUT STAFF IN HIS RIGHT HAND.

So what are we being told? The Savior reigns. The Savior is King.

GREAT
The angel says Jesus will be "great."
We use that word "great" all the time. The waitress at the restaurant tells me to have a great day. I was given some apples a month ago. Now one of my favorite desserts is apple dumplings. When I got those apples I started to think about apple dumplings. My mouth started to water. I couldn't wait. So I found the recipe and made apple dumplings. I mixed flour and shortening. I rolled out the crust. I peeled the apples. I mixed cinnamon and nutmeg and sugar and water and butter. I popped it in the oven. The house filled with the aroma of baking apples. I pulled it out of the oven. My wife came home: "what is that smell?" "Apple dumplings," I said. She said they tasted GREAT.

Jesus is GREAT. Far better than my apple dumplings. GREAT means Jesus is extraordinary, splendid, magnificent, noble, distinguished. I can't say enough about the greatness of Jesus. Isaiah describes Jesus GREATNESS for us. Let's see if you can tell me what Isaiah says:
(Isa 9:6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Jesus is GREAT. Jesus is the GREAT King. Better than any other King.

SON OF THE MOST HIGH
The angel says Jesus will be called the "Son of the Most High."
The Most High means nobody is higher. So, Who is the HIGHEST? God! God is the HIGHEST. The Hebrew word is "EL ELYON" GOD MOST HIGH.

No one is higher than God. No one is more exalted than God. No one is more powerful than God.

Jesus is the SON OF THE MOST HIGH. Jesus is the same as God.
(Jn 10:30) I and the Father are one."
(Jn 14:9) Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
Jesus is God. Jesus is the MOST HIGH. What an awesome King He is!

THE THRONE OF DAVID
The angel says Jesus will be given "the throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
If you are Roman Catholic, your Jesus is always on the cross. He is on the cross of their churches and hospitals. And, He is on the little crosses they wear around their necks.
Our Jesus is not on the cross. He is on a THRONE.
He is on the THRONE OF DAVID.
Jesus came to reign. Jesus came to rule. Jesus came to be King.

But what happened to Jesus as King?
What did King Herod do? TRIED TO KILL KING JESUS.

What did the people scream for Pilate to do to King Jesus? CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!

I already told you what the soldiers did. THE SOLDIERS GAVE HIM A CROWN OF THORNS. PUT PURPLE ROBE ON HIS BLEEDING BACK. PUT STAFF IN HIS RIGHT HAND. AND THEY MOCKED HIM AND PRETENDED HE WAS THEIR KING.

Jesus was rejected as King. As King of the Jews.

Does Jesus look like King when He is on the cross? When the soldiers nail Him to the tree? When He was suffering and dying? People mocked Him.
But the Savior reigns. Jesus Who bled and died is King.

RESPONSE
Four responses.

First response: Jesus has given you a royal robe to wear.
Apart from Christ you are wearing the rags of sin; what the Bible says is filthy old clothes.
But the King has come. He has come to take on your sin, your filthy rags.
And, He gives you a new robe to wear: His robes of righteousness.
So, girls and boys, come to Jesus. Believe in Jesus. And, you exchange your old rags of sin for His robe of righteousness.

Second response: trust Jesus as King.
Who created the stars? Who created the mountains? Who created the trees and the animals? If He is able to control all of these He is more than able to look after you. The King Who set the stars in place and is sovereign over all is someone we can always trust!

Third response: like the angel, like the shepherds, like the wise men, you need to tell others about King Jesus.
We've a story to tell to the nations.
A story of truth and gladness, a story of love and light, a story that is greater than any other story.

We need to tell people there is only one way to heaven. We say what Jesus said:
(Jn 14:6) "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Jesus is the only way to heaven and to God. People need to be told to believe in Jesus.

Fourth response: bow before Jesus as King. The wise men did that. They bowed down and worshiped. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
