************ Sermon on Faith Alone ************
By: Rev. Adrian Dieleman
This sermon was preached on October 26, 2008
Reformation Day Service - 2008
Call the children forward.
I spoke about the Bible alone.
Mr. Godfrey spoke on Grace alone.
I want you to listen to two verses from the Bible.
(Eph 2:8-9) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, (9) not of works, lest anyone should boast.
These verses tell us about Faith alone.
What is this? HOLD UP LAMP.
Try to turn it on. WHAT IS WRONG? WHY DOESN'T IT WORK?
GET KIDS TO SAY IT NEEDS TO BE PLUGGED IN.
PLUG IT IN AND TURN IT ON.
We are talking about Faith alone.
Let's compare the lamp to the Gospel of salvation.
How do we make the lamp work? BY PLUGGING IT IN.
How do we make the Gospel work? BY FAITH WHICH PLUGS US INTO CHRIST AND ALL HIS BLESSINGS.
Does the lamp work if we don't plug it in? OF COURSE NOT.
Does the Gospel work if we are NOT plugged into Jesus by faith? OF COURSE NOT.
I used an orange cord this morning. Would this black cord work? HOLD UP BLACK CORD.
OF COURSE. IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE THE COLOR OR HOW LONG IT IS.
Do I need to add something else to make the lamp work? Do I need to add a glass of water? Do I need to add some chewing gum? OF COURSE NOT. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. ALL THAT I NEED IS THE CORD.
Now, do I need to add something besides faith to make the Gospel work? Of course not. In the same way that the lamp works by the cord alone so the Gospel works by faith alone.
So, let me remind you of what we have learned this morning.
The Bible alone.
Mr. Godfrey is speaking on one more: Christ alone.
