************ Children's Sermon on 1 Samuel 3:10 ************

By: Rev. Adrian Dieleman

This sermon was preached on June 5, 2005

based on 1 Samuel 3:10
Needed: Sea Shell with sound of
microphone to pick up sound

A Sea Shell
SHOW BOYS AND GIRLS THE SEA SHELL.
Do any of you know what this is? (GET RESPONSE)
This is a sea shell. It comes from the ocean.
They look nice and are used for decorations.
Did you know, sea shells make noises. If you hold them up to your ear, you can hear the ocean. (HOLD TO MY EAR). Listen, as I put my microphone in the sea shell. (DEMONSTRATE A COUPLE OF TIMES)
If someone hadn't told me to listen, I would never have held the sea shell to my ear. If someone hadn't told me to listen, I would never have heard the sound of the ocean.

B Listen to God
We have the same thing with God: none of us thinks of listening to God until someone tells us to listen.
This morning I am reading from the Bible about the boy Samuel. God called Samuel one day, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel didn't know that was God calling him. Samuel didn't know, Samuel didn't hear, until the old man Eli told him to listen to the Lord.
Samuel is like you and me. We never think of listening for the ocean in the sea shell (HOLD UP SEA SHELL) until someone tells us to listen. Samuel never thought of listening to God until Eli told him to listen. We never think of listening to God until mom and dad tell us to listen.

C Be Quiet
Boys and girls, God wants you to listen. That means you have to be quiet. I don't hear the ocean's roar unless I quietly listen (HOLD SEA SHELL TO EAR). So shhh and listen to God.

Boys and girls, listen to God. Be like Samuel who said, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."

Let us pray ...
