Genesis

GOOD MORNING, BOYS AND GIRLS

Do any of you remember the name of the baby we baptized this morning? SILAS JOHN FIKKERT
Who picked out this name? Did the baby pick out this name?
OF COURSE NOT. THE PARENTS PICKED OUT THIS NAME.

Now, I want you boys and girls to pretend. I want you to pretend you are Adam. In the Garden. God brings all the animals and birds to you. And, it is your job to name them.

You name one animal "Stripes." What do you think that would be? GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF TIGER.

"Thick Skin." Or, "Ivory." Or, "Big Ears." GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF ELEPHANT.

"Long Nose." GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF ANTEATER.

"Long Neck." GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF GIRAFFE.

"Mr Hoppy." GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF RABBIT AND KANGAROO. Which one would Adam have picked?

"Slither in Grass." GET RESPONSE. SHOW PICTURE OF SNAKE. Except this is a trick because the first snake had legs. Snakes didn't slither until after the fall into sin.

SHOW PICTURE OF HORSE. What would you call this? "Swifty." "Strong Back."

SHOW PICTURE OF DOG. What would you call this? "Bark." "Chase."

Not so easy, is it?!

Did the animals pick out their own names? Of course not. They are like baby SILAS JOHN FIKKERT. Someone else picks out the name for them.

To name someone or something means you have authority, power, control over them; it means you rule over them. So, Mr. & Mrs. Fikkert have authority over SILAS JOHN. Just like your parents have authority over you. Just like Adam and all mankind has authority over the animals.
