Children's Message on Genesis
Needed: Large Rock
HOLD UP ROCK. What is this? Looks like a rock. Feels like a rock. If I drop it, it drops like a rock and would really hurt my toe.
HOLD UP ROCK. So what is this? This isn't a rock. It is a pillow. Jacob was running away from Esau because Esau wanted to kill him. Night was coming and he had no place to lay his head. The Bible tells us Jacob took a stone and put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
HOLD UP ROCK. How would you like a rock as a pillow? Would you have a good night's sleep? Doesn't sound like a good pillow to me.
During the night God came to Jacob in a dream. Even though Jacob was running away from home, God promised to always be with him.
HOLD UP ROCK. The next morning Jacob took the rock. He set it up as a pillar and poured oil on it.
What is a pillar? A pillar points to heaven and to God and to what God has done. Joshua set up a pillar when the people of Israel crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land. Moses set up a pillar at Mount Sinai.
"Look," says the pillar. "Look at what God has done."
We have a pillar here at the front of this building. Something that says "Look at what God has done." Do any of you know what I am talking about? Do any of you know what up here is a pillar? I am talking about the Lord's Supper table and the baptismal font. "Look," they say. "Look at what God has done."
HOLD UP ROCK. What is this? It is a rock. It is a pillow. But – like the Lord's Supper table, like the baptismal font – it is a pillar pointing to what God has done.
